Design Practice Project: “Lost Love” by Leti Mortimer music video

So, here is preview of the shoot that happened last Friday in photo studio. Leti preformed her song in completely dark room.

I illuminated her from 3 ways. On the right to the camera there was a light with red filter on it and set to around 65% intensity. On the left to the camera, there was another light with a blue filter and with intensity set to around 80%. The third light was illuminating Leti from the front. I positioned it behind the camera and slightly to the right to give her nice soft shadows and depth. Also, this light was set to around 90% intensity and had diffusing filter on.

Everything was shot on Canon 5D MkII with a 50mm f1.8 prime lens on. I planned to use Glidecam to get the shot perfectly stable. However, on the day of the shoot I discovered that it was broken and Media Services wouldn’t let me use it. Therefore I found a solution of using a tripod as a camera stabilizer. Added weight reduced the shake to minimum, but didn’t eliminated it completely.

Also, 2nd problem was Depth of Field. It was very narrow and when I tried to manually focus, shot was coming out of focus very easily. Especially during close up shoots etc. I tried to use f-stop with bigger depth of field, but I would have to increase ISO of the camera over 800. That would result in a lot of noise, so I had to work with f1.8.

Next step: film model outside the studio and then composite everything together and sync it with sound.

The Green Hornet in HD 3D IMAX Widescreen …

A while ago I have seen The Green Hornet in Odeon Uxbridge. It was in HD 3D (or whatever fancy name they manage to come up with). But the biggest surprise was the IMAX screen that was used to display the movie. I thought it will be another 3D movie, but this one looked different on IMAX screen.

First thing was the glasses. You can’t keep them (theyn why the ticket was so expensive?!), they ar bigger, a bit heavier than normal 3D glasses.

Second thing was the screen. It was really bright and looked and feeled bigger.

Now about the movie. It was another action flick with special effects and action/comedy actor Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz. Story was quite simple, with few twists that didn’t really had impact on the whole experience and it was just a pleasure to watch.

The big plus of the whole movie in 3D at IMAX cinema were the special effects. maybe they were done in a really god way or they had huge budget to make sure they are good. Whatever the reason, they looked good. Everything was sharp as knife or out of focus with right perspective and blur and bokeh. It really had 3D depth and feel. It wasn’t subtle 3D as it had stuff flying at you or “poking around” from the screen, but also, it didn’t stressed my eyes too much, while doing all the crazy focus pulls etc.

I have seen few 3D movies in my life so far, including famous/infamous/over-expensive Avatar, but movie in 3D at IMAX is simply WOW. All the glass being shattered, bullets, fire, even opening credits were razor sharp or blurred as they should be.

I think 3D is great fun, but real experience is in IMAX cinemas with great surround. Thats the only place you can experience 3D as it should be.

And I give a movie 6/10. Nice quick action packed with bits of humour, great for a Sunday afternoon.
